Default MS Office Head/Footer missing in new page

Hi,
For some strange reason, when i open a new ms word document, the header
and footer is missing?? I can start typing at the very top of the page.
I cannot adjust the header and footer because its not there. The whole
page layout looks weird without header/footer.

The only way to get the header and footer back is by clicking on "View
- Header/Footer" and it appears. Once i click on that, it stays on the
page permanently.

What have i done?

Please Help.

Shirish
