My template ask and fill-in fields don't function in a new doc.
The .dot template has text and the fields. New docs created from the .dot file show the file, not the ask or fill-in boxes for user to enter the unique information. I've read for hours & still don't get it. Thanks -- Juli |

Hi ?B?SnVsaQ==?=,

Which version of Word are you working with? Can you describe how you create a new document from your template (just to make sure we're on the same wave-length)? I so appreciate your help. Here's what I do:
----Open a new doc and save as a .dot template in templates folder. ----Enter boiler plate, and insert ask fields (with ref fields) and fill-in fields. ----Save (as documentname.dot). Hmm, I see where you may be going with your question. To create a new document I open the template, and get the template itself, without being asked to answer or fill-in the unique info. I don't know how else to do it. Several in our office are stuck on this and look forward to your answer. You should not be opening the template. The default action for templates (in
Windows Explorer) should be New, and of course if you store the template in the user templates/workgroup templates folder and use File | New to create a document, you'll get a .doc by default. -- Suzanne S. Suzanne,
Sorry to be dense. You are saying I need to open the new doc a special way, but what exactly do I do, once I have saved the template. thanks for your patience -- Juli "Suzanne S. You do exactly what was suggested in the previous post. From the file menu
select New. Pick your template and a new document is created from it. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org Juli wrote: Suzanne, Sorry to be dense. When I enter File, New, my choices do not include the template I have
created. And I could use a bit of handholding the references to Windows Explorer and how to open a file from File New in it. Perhaps my problem has to do with how or where I am saving the .dot file. My computer also has work-specific software, Amicus and Hummingbird DocsOpen, which may be complicating things. Thanks for your patience. Looking forward to your reply. -- Juli "Cindy M." wrote: Hi ?B?SnVsaQ==?=, To create a new document I open the template, and get the template itself, without being asked to answer or fill-in the unique info. If you save a template as a template, Word should automatically save it in
the default template location, which is also the path given for "User templates" on the File Locations tab of Tools | Options. If your template is not saved in that folder (or a subfolder thereof), it won't appear in the File New dialog. -- Suzanne S. Hi ?B?SnVsaQ==?=,

Perhaps my problem has to do with how or where I am saving the .dot file. My computer also has work-specific software, Amicus and Hummingbird DocsOpen, which may be complicating things. Well, if you use Windows Explorer to navigate to the place where the *.dot file is saved, just double-click it. The default installation settings should create a new document when you double-click. In Word: Tools/Options/File locations, the settings for "User Template" and "Workgroup templates" define what appears in the "New" dialog box. Since you still haven't told us which version of Word you're using, I can't determine where you are when you do File/New. You have to give us that information if you want accurate assistance. I have no idea if Amicus and DocsOpen change how Word functions; I suspect they do. You may need to contact your IT department and ask them where and how to store your own templates so that they're available from within Word.
