Default Word 2000 formatting

Any formatting that I try to apply to a word or sentence in a document (ie,
underline, bold, bullet, indent...) ends up applied to my entire document. I
highlight a couple of words, hit the bold button and then Word freezes up for
a minute or two. When it finally unfreezes, my entire document has the
formatting change.

Why is this and how can I make it stop?
