Default how to show different TOC levels

I have "Heading 1" showing in the TOC. My "Heading 2" entries in the body of
the document are not showing in the TOC, even after I refresh the TOC (using
F9). Can you help? Thank you.

Did you include Level 2 in the TOC? Press Alt+F9 to display the TOC field
code. By default, it will show { TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u }. If you don't have,
at minimum, "1-2" for the levels, then Level 2 won't be included.

Thank you. I see the code and I have more questions:
1. When I try to change the "{ TOC \o "1-1" \h \z \u }" that shows
initially to "{ TOC \o "1-2" \h \z \u }", I can't seem to get it to update.
I tried F9, and the code still shows. Should I update the code somewhere
else?
2. In another document, when I tried the same thing, the TOC updated, but
also shows the "Normal" formatting that is below the Heading 2 formatted
text. What did I do wrong?

Thanks, Suzanne, your replies are always helpful.

You should be able to edit the field code manually, toggle back with Alt+F9,
then F9 to update. As for the second issue, are you sure the text below your
heading is actually in Normal (or some other non-heading) style? That the
heading ends with a paragraph break and not a line break?

Okay, thanks. I got the Alt+F9, so I'm back at the TOC with the Heading 2
showing. However, the Normal text below the Heading 2 is still showing in
the TOC. I checked, using the Show/Hide formatting, and it appears that I
did a hard return after the Heading 2 lines. Is that what you mean by
"paragraph break"?

Yes, that's what I meant. Make sure that the style applied to the body text
has an outline level of Body Text and not Level 2 (Format | Paragraph).
