Default 1 of n, 2 of n in doc footer; 1 of 1, 2 of 2 in printout

I have found some kind of bug in the page numbering function whereby the page
numbering is correct in the document, but when printed out the info sent to
the printer substitutes page number for page total.
A recent example of this problem is, in a document that was printing pages
correctly (1 of 7, 2 of 7 ...), I changed the left footer text (page of
numpages is in right footer; I also changed 3 words in the main text of the
document). As a result of these simple changes, the documetn is now printin
1 of 1, 2 of 2 ...
Someone told me that Word does this if there is a graphic (e.g. company
logo) as the first item in document/page header. I find that hard to believe
as a lot of companies put logos in upper left corner of documents.
