Purchase Order Template WOES
I'm having some real problems and really need some help.
I cannot get the bracketed number off my template and just have the number that populates. I don't know how to save this thing so I can edit the template w/out opening a new sequential template number. I tried to add a drop down box into one of the template form areas and it doesn't work. I saved this to a networked S drive and when I went into Word and tried to open it up like a user would, it's not there. I tried to protect the template but cannot 'section' off just the parts that need protecting. This project is overdue and I have a horrible headache. heeeelp..... |

Purchase Order Template WOES
It's a MSO Template (Purchase Order) URL noted:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/te...CT101172741033 Here are some questions. (1) Is it true that BEFORE I "save as" I need to make all of the adjustments to this template? I ask this because I did a "save as" and then couldn't find it to edit the original template. (2) I see how after you "save as" you can to into Word and then "General templates" on the Right column and open from there...is that the template that I edit or is that the "copy" that others in the office use? (3) I was able to use the language that was posted regarding "AutoNew" to sequentially add a number, but cannot get it to work today. Yesterday it worked fine...today...ugh! (4)-Back to question 1...after I click on download, and the template is on my screen...when I click on "save as"...am I suppose to be putting this in my shared "S" drive for the office at this point? If so, will it show up under General Templates in the right column when Word is opened later? So sorry for all of this...I'm new to this and just having a bear of a time on this project that I wanted to "wow" my boss with...and now it's a flop. Pat "Robert M. Purchase Order Template WOES
Hello Patty
Patty wrote: It's a MSO Template (Purchase Order) URL noted: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/te...CT101172741033 Thanks for the link. [Looks like one of the better templates I've met on OfficeOnline. One page, table layout, all are inline with text, only one font is used ... pretty much no-nonsense template. :-) It may be filled in on screen or after printing, not locked for forms.] Here are some questions. (1) Is it true that BEFORE I "save as" I need to make all of the adjustments to this template? I ask this because I did a "save as" and then couldn't find it to edit the original template. [I had a hard time on this computer with only Word 2000, because both browsers are set to not allow ActiveX components, so I had to manually download it -- probably not quite the same way as you got the file to your computer.] Word probably saved it directly to your template folder. You can find that by looking up one of the tabs in Tools | Options | ... (sorry, non-English version of Word here at the moment :-)), where Word lists folders for documents, templates, workgroup templates, etc. (2) I see how after you "save as" you can to into Word and then "General templates" on the Right column and open from there...is that the template that I edit or is that the "copy" that others in the office use? Once you have finished customizing the template, make sure you save it with your other workgroup templates. (3) I was able to use the language that was posted regarding "AutoNew" to sequentially add a number, but cannot get it to work today. Yesterday it worked fine...today...ugh! Well, maybe you should open a new thread for that. And post more than "doesn't work" (which usually doesn't make problem diagnosis any simpler :-)). (4)-Back to question 1...after I click on download, and the template is on my screen...when I click on "save as"...am I suppose to be putting this in my shared "S" drive for the office at this point? If so, will it show up under General Templates in the right column when Word is opened later? This comes down to personal work style. I would probably save it to my Desktop as long as I'm working on it. (You are aware that, if you double click on a template file, the default action is Word creating a new document based on this template? As long as you want to edit the template itself, use right-click: _Open_ or pull the template into an otherwise empty Word window ...) Once I'm done with it, I put it into my own template folder (usually in a project specific subfolder), or to a workgroup template folder. So sorry for all of this...I'm new to this and just having a bear of a time on this project that I wanted to "wow" my boss with...and now it's a flop. Good luck! :-) Robert -- /"\ ASCII Ribbon Campaign | MS \ / | MVP X Against HTML | for / \ in e-mail & news | Word |

Purchase Order Template WOES
Here's what happens if I download the template in Word 2003: It opens a new
instance of Word (splash screen displays, and when I close the document I have an application window still open), yet opens as Document2 (*not* a template in the strict sense--i.e., not a .dot file). If I click on the Save button, I do at least get the default Word documents folder (not the Windows Temp folder as often happened in the past), but *not* the user templates folder, and I would have to manually change the document type to save it as a template. If I do change the file type to Document Template, then Word does default to the templates folder. I would advise saving it as a template (in the templates folder) *before* putting any work into customizing it. -- Suzanne S.
