Default Backspace

Whenever I highlight a word and want to delete it with the backspace button
it doesn't work. Does anybody know why or how I can fix it? But the backspace
button works fine when I delete each letter one by one.

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit tab | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
