Not a Microsoft Word question, but...
The standard desktop icons can be restored by right-clicking on the
desktop, selecting display properties, selecting the desktop tab,
clicking on advanced, and re-checking the boxes on the icons you want
to reappear.

Which icons? All of them?

If you look in the Recycle Bin, you might find them there and be able to
Restore them.

Otherwise, use Windows Explorer to find the document or program the icons
used to point to. Right-click the item there and choose Send To Desktop
(create shortcut).

It's darned difficult to accidentally delete all of your icons at one time.
Are you sure you didn't just turn them off?

Right-click on your desktop -Arrange Icons By - Show Desktop Icons Is it
checked or not? If not, click on it.

Which version of windows are you using? I don't have an Advanced button on
the Desktop tab. I have XP Pro. Just curious..........
