Default why a flickering cursor

Ok...this is weird. I am in a W 2003 document. When I go into a table to make
a change two things happen: The cursor starts to flicker and the open book
icon on the status bar has the little pencil moving across continuously. It
will let me add text to the table, but as soon as I stop editing, the
flickering starts up again.

I have saved the file and closed it; flickering starts all over again when I
reopen it and edit. I have closed the file and closed Word. When I reopen the
file and start making edits again, the flickering cursor is back. This is
making me nuts!

Also, exactly what is the little open book supposed to signify and what is
it called ( I cannot find it in my Word reference book)? I've assumed it was
to clue you in the Word was writing to the file or maybe checking the
dictionary or something like that.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

The icon indicates that "Check spelling as you type" is operational.
Flickering in general just means that Word has too many balls in the air for
the video driver to keep up with. Does the same thing happen if you switch
to Normal view?

Well..the flickering stopped so I cannot try your view change suggestion.
I'll keep this in mind should it rear its ugly head again.

thanks Suzanne.
