Default Back/Next browsing not working

I'm working on multiple documents rife with captions and cross-
references. When I attempt to browse within the document using the
back/next icons, I'm sent to the wrong place. For example, I'm in the
List of Figures, I click on one of the figures listed, am taken to the
correct figure, but when I hit the "back" icon, it sends me elsewhere
in the document, rather than back to my list of figures. Same goes
within the document. I click a cross-reference, it takes me to the
correct caption, but when I hit back I'm sent wandering.

Any ideas? I'm on a massively stupid deadline and would appreciate
any help anyone can offer.

I'm working in Word 2003, on an XP platform.

Yeah: In Word the "Back" button fires the "Previous Edit" command, which
you can also reach via Shift + F5.

That cycles through the past three or five editing locations in the
document, depending on your version of Word and how long you have had the
document open.

So: It doesn't have the same function as a browser's "back" button. Hit it
several times and you will get back to where you were eventually.

Cheers
