I too have recently started having this problem ( I am using Office 2000
Premium): whenever I try to open Word or a Word document the taskbar shows "requesting virus scan" and the program stops responding. If I leave it alone and do something else, Word will open after about 12 minutes, but is then liable to hang at the slightest provocation. (Incidentally Excel also "requests a virus scan" but this takes less than a second.) I note there are many posts on this subject scattered across the groups, but 99% of these relate to an incompatibility with Norton Antivirus: I have never had NAV on my PC and use the free version of AVG. I have tried unticking the "scan documents" box in AVG but this seems to make no difference except bring up a dire warning that my PC is unprotected. I have also tried a repair installation of Office and deleted the "normal.dot" file but neither had any effect. Any suggestions would be welcome. -- Athlon 64 3500+, MSI K8N, 1Gb DDR RAM, 120 Gb SATA self-built with XP Pro + SP2. Still a relative newcomer, though. |

I've had exactly this problem in the last few days with Word 2002. As you say, 99% of solutions refer to Norton, but I run AVG7 Free. Tried all the usual, and not so usual fixes, and got so confused in the end I don't recall where I saw the eventual answer. Rather than delete 'normal.dot', the advice was to rename it 'normal.old' - subsequently Word produces a new 'normal.dot' and 'requesting virus scan' lock-up disappears! Worked for me - hope it does for you. - - Martin in Moray, Scotland |

Martin,
Nice to hear from someone in God's own country. Unfortunately this didn't fix it, but my wife found the answer for me at : http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...peningWord.htm I renamed the "data" file in the registry (scary!!!) and hey presto Word opened as normal. Many thanks for your input anyway. Awrabest, Jim |
