I seem to have the opposite problem of most folks who post--I reuse a
document, pasting new information halfway down a page that is auto-numbered. I want the numbering to continue, but it starts back at 1. Within the 'Format/Bullets and Numbering' dialog, on the 'Outline Numbered' tab, the option to 'continue previous numbering' is greyed out. Why? (also, the 'Customize Outline Numbered List' option to 'Restart numbering after:' is greyed out, but unchecked) |

John,
I really appreciate the post. I have already looked at Shauna's site--some of the links are outdated, so I came here for help. What I mostly got out of her site is that Word is really screwed up in this area, and has been from the beginning. I'm not a Word power user and don't understand styles, lists, etc. I don't know how to NOT paste as a new list--I simply copy and paste. The simple workaround I discovered later is to paste my new text, then select the ENTIRE list, and then hit the "Format\bullets and numbering..." so now I don't care if it renumbers. Someday when I've got some time on my hands I'll try to figure out how to manipulate styles, lists, etc. Thanks again! By default, Word re-starts numbering after a new style. You may want to use one of the Heading series of styles for your numbering: they are specially designed NOT to restart numbering. Or you can customise the list yourself, as explained by Shauna Kelly on her website {Google for it}. Note that the numbering must be associated with a style, as explained by Shauna, before this will work.
