My MSWord seems to be locked in a single page mode. To go to the next page I
need to press ctrl-enter. This seems to have started when I downnloaded an
article from an online news magazine. I thought only the first page
downloaded until I pressed ctrl-enter. Now thios affects Word in general,
not just on downloads.

Word does not have a single-page mode. Pressing Ctrl-Enter inserts a page
break, so subsequent text will start a new page. It is usually not necessary
to press this, since Word splits up multiple pages of text automatically.
