After much searching about versioning Word 2007, I came across the following
on TechNet:

Versioning
Description: The versioning feature is removed.
Reason for change: This feature is replaced by document life cycle (DLC)
functionality in the 2007 Office release.

And that's all I've found despite hours of searching. The best I can
determine is that versioning now requires SharePoint Server, although I'm
not certain of this. I'll admit I don't use versioning often but am hoping
there's a way to still use this on a stand-alone system. Any suggestions
are welcome,

I produced a macro a while back that will save numbered versions of a
document. I see no reason why it should not be used with 2007 albeit it will
probably need a change to the filename extension to accommodate the changes

This macro may be useful, but it doesn't replace actual versioning within
Word. This creates multiple copies, where versioning would be a single
document. I'm guessing this has now requires Sharepoint, although this
seems a bit extreme just to create multiple versions of a document for local
use.

Yes, you're correct, it's really gone from the product. If you try to save a
doc with versions from Word 2007, you should get a warning that you'll lose
any Versions stored in the document.

Hi Mike,

MS Word no longer has the versioning feature and the 'handling' of already versioned file was handled as something only 'enterprise'
(large scale) customers would use.

The life cycle feature you mentioned is part of the MS Office Sharepoint 2007 (server) based products as you mentioned.

Graham's suggestion would be one way to get some functionallity into a standalone copy of Word 2007. Unfortunately if you open a
Word created versioned document in Word 2007 (from a prior verison) you aren't told that you will lose all of the earlier versions
*until* you go to save that file, usually after editing it (expectation is that you should get a warning on opening).

There is a MS Version Extraction Tool (VET) available from Microsoft as part of the Office 2007 Migration Planning and Management
(OMPM) tool kit, (http://microsoft.com/office/ork) except that to use VET.exe you'll need to create a 'data file' listing the files
you want to extract to use it (i.e. it doesn't work 'on its own' from a Windows commandline) [on my list of things to do is to try
scripting that file format via a batch file with a 'pseudo' command line g]
