Default word 2002- replacing highlighted text with new text

Recently when I highlight a portion of text in a word document to edit it,
the highlighted text is not replaced with my new text but simply moved over.
How can I restore the original feature? I would like to highlight some text
and once I begin typing, I would like the highlighted text to delete being
replaced by the new.
