Default Saving Template Location

Word 2003.

I have been saving templates which I have generated, into folders named
after the author of the applicable document. However, when I attempt to open
a saved template from an individual's folder, I am not afforded the option of
opening the template as a document - only as a template.

Additionally, when I open one of these saved templates and make revisions; I
am unable to re-save the revised document as anything other than a template -
not as a document.

I'm sure that there is a step that I am missing and I was wondering if these
inabilities stem from not having saved these templates under the default
template folders as established by Word.

I will be most appreciative of any insight or suggestions in this regard.

Thanks - Rod

If you open from inside of Word - then the templates will open so that you
can make further modification. However, if you would put a shortcut into
your templates folder for those folder, you should be able to click File,
New and find the templates and create a New document based on the template.

My templates folder is: C:\documents and settings\[UserName]\Application
Data\Microsoft\templates

Default Saving Template Location

Hi Dawn,

I am looking for a similar solution. In Word 2002 and prior, I used to be
able to save my created templates in any folder, open them from Windows
Explorer and the new document opens up. Now I just noticed in 2003, when I
save my templates in my own unique folders, it opens up as a template. This
totally defeats the purpose of building the template, and I don't want to
have to always go thru the Task PaneNew DocumentsTemplates on My Computer
process just to use a template. I read that if I change the security settings
on my other folders than my created templates will act properly, but I don't
know what the security settings should be. I greatly appreciate your help.

It sounds like you're looking for the File New dialog. See
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/C...ngWord2002.htm.

Also, if you want to create new files based on a template by double-clicking
the template in Windows Explorer, make sure the default Windows action for
..dot files is New rather than Open.

Default Saving Template Location

Your last comment about setting the default Windows action worked. Thank you,
Suzanne. I've never had to set that before, it usually defaulted to "new".

I do have another question. If I do create a new template and save it in the
Templates folder. How do I edit the template if I want to change it? I looked
in the Templates folder and did not see the template I created, even after
unchecked "hidden" on the Templates folder Attributes.

Thanks again,

Tom

Default Saving Template Location

Are you *sure* that's where you saved it? I've never had any problem
finding, opening, and editing a template in any version of Word. If you
create a template from scratch (by choosing Template instead of Document
when you create the file) or save as a template (by choosing "Document
Template") Word (in all versions through Word 2003) will default to the
folder you have specified for "User templates" on the File Locations tab of
Tools | Options. You can then, of course, select a subfolder if you want the
template to be on a different tab. Note that the built-in templates and user
templates are stored in different folders in Word 2000 and above. Make sure
the folder you used is the one where Normal.dot is stored.
