![]() In Word 2003 I was able to drag the word count bar onto the desktop or place it on the top toolbar. I was also able to choose whether I wanted to show Words, Characters (with or without spaces), and Paragraphs etc. I have noticed in Word 2007 that there is a word count down the bottom of the screen. What I want to know is if I can change it to show the amount of characters instead of words like I could in Word 2003? I am trialling Word 2007 at present. -- Steve |

Hi there,
Thank you for your reply. It wasnt exactly what I was after. By placing the word count icon on the quick access toolbar as suggested in your reply, it still doesnt show the actual count on the screen like in Word 2003. If I press Alt+C in Word 2003 it would refresh the Character count on screen. This doesnt seem to be possible in Word 2007. Look forward to your response. The Word Count toolbar in Word 2003 uses the ToolsWordCountList and
ToolsWordCountRecount commands. While I can find the corresponding commands for both for keyboard assignment, the one you really want--ToolsWordCountList--doesn't seem to respond to a key assignment. If the ToolsWordCountList command is still available, you could put it onto the QAT. But, I don't see a QAT-assignable command in the long list of All Commands. Work-around You could -- in Word 2003 or earlier -- in a new document template, create a custom toolbar, copy the Word Count tools to it, and save the custom toolbar in the .dot file. Then, use Developer - Document Template to add the .dot file as a global add-in. This then makes the Add-Ins tab available in the ribbon. With that tab displayed, you would then have the Word Count toolbar tools available in Word 2007, but only when the Add-Ins tab is displayed. You could then also assign ToolsWordCountRecount to a keystroke to update the count displayed. All told however, it's nowhere nearly as convenient as it was in Word 2003. I don't know if any of the 3rd party customization tools would help it. It's possible. The problem seems to be that the individual tool that displays the counts isn't accessible as is. I don't know if the 3rd party tools could get around that limitation. -- Herb Tyson MS MVP Author of the Word 2007 Bible Blog: http://word2007bible.herbtyson.com Web: http://www.herbtyson.com "Steven" wrote in message ... Just to clarify... for the work-around, you would need to create the .dot
file using Word 2003. Then, in Word 2007, load that file as a global add-in. This requires having Word 2003 (which I kept when I installed 2007). -- Herb Tyson MS MVP Author of the Word 2007 Bible Blog: http://word2007bible.herbtyson.com Web: http://www.herbtyson.com "Herb Tyson [MVP]" wrote in message ...
