Hi, I have just brought together all the chapters of my thesis today. I am
struggling with getting chapter numbers in the caption. i have used heading 1 for my chapter headings, but these are not outline numbered, since I want the word 'chapter' to appear before the number. The drop down box at the caption - include chapter stage does not show this style. Grrrr........ How have others done it? Catherine |

You want to include the current chapter into a caption e.g.
Fig. 1 Chapter 1 Text and Chapter 1 is the heading of that chapter formatted with the heading one style? Insert the caption without reference to the chapter then add a Styleref field to call the heading 1 style into the reference text. This would produce a combination of fields along the lines of Fig. { SEQ Figure } { Styleref "Heading 1" } Text You could save the part - Fig. { SEQ Figure } { Styleref "Heading 1" } as an autotext or autocorrect entry and insert that instead of the caption then selecft all and update the fields to show the correct numbers. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org catherine wrote: Hi, I have just brought together all the chapters of my thesis today. The chapter numbers will need to use outline numbering, but you can
certainly put "Chapter" (or any other text) before the number. In fact, the last pane in the default List Gallery in Format | Bullets and Numbering | Outline Numbered has this format already. In order to automatically include "chapter numbers" in captions, you must use a built-in heading style with auto numbering for the chapter number. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/ChapterNumber.htm. Graham has suggested another approach, but I believe he may have misunderstood your intentions. -- Suzanne S. As Suzanne pointed out, an outline number format can include text; the
text will not be included with the caption. In other words, you don't have to use two separate styles. However, you will need two styles if you want to exclude the word "Chapter" from the TOC. Use the heading style for chapter numbering (and caption numbering) and your custom style for the (unnumbered) heading text. -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "catherine" wrote in message ... To add to what Stefan has said, note that you don't need to omit numbering
in the TOC just because you don't want "Chapter 1" in the TOC; you can add numbering to the TOC style.
