how do I alternate no. of columns from line to line, i.e., 1, then
I am trying to title a series of sections that have 2 columns with 1 centered
phrase in between each section. |

You need a section break for each layout change you want to make... in this

Or use frames to span the two columns, or use a table with merged cells...
