Default track changes

Is there a way to quickly know, when I first open a document, if track
changes is on or off? Rather than going to the tools drop down to see?

Look at the Status bar. If track changes is on, TRK should appear in the
Status bar. (If the Status bar [bottom of Word screen] is not displayed,
then choose Tools - Options - View, and tick Status bar.
