I am trying to put 1/3 into a word document, it chnages the formatting for
1/2, 1/4 and 3/4 but nothing else

You can only do this if the font contains the required fraction character -

Use glyph 2153. Insert it using Insert | Symbol or by typing 2153 and
pressing Alt+X. For more, see
