Default why can't i turn on document protection?

i made some changes to a form that was made in an older version of Word and
was able to turn protection off to do so. Now I want to protect the form
again and when I open the restrict formatting box, I am unable to click on
any of the checkboxes to turn protection back on. I see that someone else
had the same problem and posted the same question on this message board, but
everytime I try to open the replies Internet Explorer says there's an error
on the page. I'm hoping that by posting a new question, an answer will
actually come to me. Thanks!
