Default Green squares in Line and Page Break Dialog

When one selects, say, Keep with Next, there is a green checkmark
inserted in the box to show that the action is active.

Sometimes when one opens that dialog box there are one or more green
BOXES inside the checkbox. What does that mean? What does one do when
encountering that?

The green square indicates that different settings apply to the text you have
selected. For example, if you have selected text from two paragraphs, one
that has "Keep with next" turned on and the other with the setting turned
off, "Keep with next" will have a green square. To apply the same settings to
the entire selection, just click the check box once or twice to have the box
checked or cleared.

Fields like "Space before" are blank if you have selected text with
different settings.
