Default Page x of y

I enter this in my footer and it inserts it correctly, i.e. Page 1 of 4.
Then I save it and close. When I re-open it, it displays Page 1 of 1, Page 2
of 1, Page 3 of 1, Page 4 of 1.
Can someone help me retain the formatting? I'm using Word 97. Thanks.

See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/PageXofY.htm, which has a
section specifically about Word 97 (about halfway down the page).
