Press Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S. Click the Manage Styles button. Click the Set
Defaults tab. Choose the desired options. Click "New documents based on this
template," and then click OK.

There should be three buttons at the bottom of the dialog box - one of them
is "Manage Styles"

Are you sure that you are looking in the correct location? If the shortcut
isn't working for you, you should be able to display the Styles pane by
clicking the dialog launcher button in the Styles group (of the Home tab).

If you are just changing the font, you can press the Default button in the
Font dialog box, as suggested by Venture. Similarly, the Default button in
the Paragraph dialog box allows you to set the default line spacing,
indents, etc.

I have a client who just cannot change the default font size in Word 07. We've tried doing it the normal way in the Font dialogue box and also through manage styles but Word still insists on using Arial size 12.

Any other suggestions?
