I have a user who whenever she is working on a document, created from a
template, that she isnt required to save will use Ctrl F4 to close the document, and when prompted to save any changes she will select no. She has recently been provided with another pc, which has Office 2003 installed. Now whenever she uses Ctrl F4 to close the document, as well as being asked to save the changes to the newly created document, she is also asked to save the changes to the underlying template as well. She has logged on under her own user ID onto other machines with exactly the same setup, and the problem doesnt exist, which leads me to believe that there is something that needs to be checked/unchecked within the Word options, as the problem doesnt exist with any other user who has access to this template, nor when this user uses an alternative pc . In addition I have logged onto her pc under my own ID and have the same problem |

Hi Graham
thanks for the suggestions, however still having the same problems. Have now u-installed office basic 2003 and installed office SBE 2003 but that hasn't resolved problem either. Only have the issue if the users use CTRL F4 to close a document, any other method to close a document works fine. Am presently using a work around of a macro assigned to a function key to replace the CTRL F4 option "Graham Mayor" wrote: This would be very bad practice as it then saves changes to normal.dot without asking permission. My guess is that there are some orphan temporary files screwing up the works See http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm Attend to those and then when prompted to save the changes, save them. Hopefully the prompt will then go away. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org |

![]() Further update on this problem. Have managed to replicate the same issue on a further four machines using CTRL + W, in that they all wish to save to the template that the document was based on as well as the document itself. These 5 machines all came pre-installed with a trial for office 2007, which was removed using add/remove programs in the control panel (O/S in WIN XP PRO) and office 2003 either Basic or SBE editions were installed. I can only assume that when deleting office 2007 some erroneous setting have remained on these machines that is causing CTRL + W and/or CTRL + F4 not to function as expected. |

While I suppose that what you say is possible, it seems unlikely. I have had
the trial version of Office 2007 on this PC (now upgraded to a ful version) and I have Word 2003 installed, and there is no interaction between them and I cannot recreate your problem (albeit I don't have your templates). It might be a good next plan to reset Word to startup defaults, by renaming the Word Data key in the registry so that Word will build a new one, and remaing the normal template to oldnormal.dot. This and other trouble shooting tips are covered at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...peningWord.htm -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org Colin Eyton wrote: Further update on this problem.
