This particular character substitution generally is a result of opening a
document that at some point originated in WordPerfect and used the WP Typographic Symbols font for quotes, apostrophes, dashes, etc. As long as the font is installed, you get what look like ordinary symbols (though they come from the WP font and not the default paragraph font), but if the font is not available, you get the equivalent in the DPF. You can approach the problem from either of two directions: you can install the required font (temporary Band-Aid), or you can convert the symbols to their Unicode equivalent in the DPF. -- Suzanne S. thank you.
sounds reasonable. the messageSEEMED to indicate it was a msword .doc not wp. would these corrupted characters appear on the other recipients? i suspect it would vary depending on the program and the version on the recipient machine? and the default para settings? The document could well have been converted and saved as a Word file at some
point in the past. As long as the user who was working on it had the WP Typographic Symbols font installed, he/she would not be aware that the symbols were not the standard issue. Only when it's opened on a machine without the font does the problem arise (or become noticeable). This has nothing to do with the application version or paragraph settings or selected font. -- Suzanne S. thank you very much.
i am passing these clarifications on to the person/office thatdid the keyboarding in the hope that she can re-edit the document to make it readable by all who received it. i tried to correct thing with the cnrl+h process. the = to apostrophy switch worked but when i highlited the upper case "A" the find and replace screen showed the correct "(" symbol and not the "A" symbol that showed in my text on the screen and in the printed output. the whole thing is weird. i copied and pasted a portion of the document that is the focus of my concerns. -President Wilson=s King-Crane Commission - = instead of ' -states, AAll men are created equal€¯- an A istead of " -and they defend themselvesY The country - Y instead of closing quote character "Suzanne S. Take a closer look at that upper-case A. I'll bet it has some kind of
an accent mark (diacritic) above it. Use Control+H again; this time COPY the "A" that you don't like and Paste it into the Find line. Then put your parens into the replace line. And fire away! BTW, once you get the substitutions figured out, you can record them as a Macro and run it on any future documents of this kind. What you see in the Find and Replace dialog will often look different from
what you copied, but the replace will work anyway. You can try Find Next to see if it finds the right thing. -- Suzanne S.
