Default word doc saved as doc file

When I transferred my files from my old win2000 pc to my new Vista, a lot of
the word files were changed to doc files. Now I can't open them. Can someone
tell me how?

Word documents *are* doc files?
Vista is an operating system. It does not open Word documents, so what are
you trying to open them with?
