Default How do I open Word without a split window?

When I open Word it opens with a split window. I can remove the split, but if
I do a print preview, when I close the preview, th esplit comes back.

I cannot imagine how this can occur without the interference of a macro

That being the case, the problem should go away if you start Word in its
safe mode (hold the CTRL key whilst starting and acknowledge the prompt). If
it does - investigate what add-ins and templates are in play - see
