I have a small graphic in some of my headings (at the very begining), and it
shows up in the TOC. Is there any way I can keep the graphic out? I can't
delete it manually, since this deletes the entire TOC entry.

Use a style separator, as described he

Format the graphic (presumably in-line with text) using a non-heading style,
and format what follows the style separator (which looks like a paragraph
mark, when non-printing characters are displayed) using the desired heading
style.
