Default Delete key with a mind of its own

--
Kokopop. While working on a long document in Word 2007, I selected a
paragraph and hit Delete. Nothing happened. After several failed attempts,
I tried another tack: I selected the paragraph, right clicked and hit Cut.
The text remained there unchanged, and a little box came up to say that €śThis
is deleted text,€ť as if that explained something. The only way I was able to
proceed was to copy the portions I wanted to retain and paste them into a new
document, then delete the entire first document. Can anyone tell me what is
going on?
