I can't get the the number of the currently displayed Word page to show in
the Windows taskbar (bar at bottom of page). On other computers as I move
through the Word document it changes to reflect the page I've clicked on -
i.e in a 54-page document, if I'm working on page 17, "page 17/54" (or
something like that) would show at the bottom of my screen.

This information has never been shown in the Windows taskbar, but it is
shown in the Word status bar, which you evidently don't have displayed. Go
to Tools | Options | View and check the box for "Status bar."
