Default Diappearing Footer

I have a Word 2003 document. The first page is a title page. I want to insert
a footer with the name of the document and page x of y. There is a page break
on the title page. I insert the footer on the actual second page which I
intend to be page 1 of the document. It inserts on that page but on none of
the following pages. I searched and cannot find any section breaks. What
could this be? Thanks.

NOTE: If I go to the second page of the text and insert a footer there, the
footer shows up throughout the rest of the document. What gives?

Sounds like you have "Different first page" enabled (File | Page Setup |
Layout), and you have put the field in the First Page Footer only.

You have a next-page section break between the title page and the second
page, or a continuous section break somewhere on the second page, and
you have selected "different first page" headers and footers in File |
Page Setup | Layout. You might be able to more easily see the section
break if you change to Normal view.

Yes. I have a section break after the title page. So, different first page
refers to the actual first page of the footer (which in this case is page 2
of the whole document) and not the actual first page of the document?

Is there an easier approach to this?

Is there an easier way to accommodate a title page that would not be
numbered as part of the whole document?

Many thanks.

"Different first page" applies to the header and footer. See
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm.
