Default Style drop-down showing style not in use when it is being used

I'm working on a set of templates in Word 2003 and a new problem has arisen.
When I click on the drop-down menu beside a style name that is in use (and I
apply the style just to be sure) ALL the styles say: Select All: Not
Currently in Use. This is happening in all the documents I create now, even
new ones. Is this a setting that I don't know about?

This doesn't mean the style is not in use. It means that "Select All" is not
currently in use because you have cleared the check box for "Keep track of
formatting" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options.
