Default Autoformat Option Selections don't hold

First, Yes garfield-n-odie, I did ask that same question a ways back. The
frustration level from my option selection problem began climbing again
lately and when I tried to find the "Windows in Taskbar" selection again I
couldn't remember how to get there. What's worse, earlier when you provided
the answer I thought that was such a plausible place for that selection I
didn't save a copy of the post in my Uh-Oh file, but it's saved there now.

But the bigger problem is that all my selections in "Format - Autoformat -
Options - AutoFormat & AutoCorrect & AutoFormat As You Type" revert to
default settings everytime I close then reopen Word. Examp: When I uncheck
"Replace Fractions ... with fraction character...", (as well as the Windows
in Taskbar selection) the next time I open Word, it is checked again. I've
uninstalled and reinstalled Word 2003 from my Office Basic 2003 disc but the
option selections still revert upon closing. This system and software (os=XP)
was new this past spring and all was good for a few months then suddenly
changed. This Auto stuff in Word is the only problem I've noticed. Apparently
I have screwed something up somewhere. What do you spose I've done to cause
this? All ideas, comments, and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, K.

The AutoFormat settings should be stored in a "Data" key in the registry,
but if that key is damaged, your changes can't be saved. The article at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErr...ngMenusEtc.htm explains how to
delete the existing key so that Word will rebuild a new one. Before you do
that, save the settings you want to keep by following the instructions at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Custom...eserveSettimgs

Jay, Thank You for such a prompt reply. Obviously I forgot to explain that my
system is Windows XP, because it appears as if both articles you referenced
are for 97 and 2000. Because I am quite computerly challenged, I would never
attempt any procedure that is not conspicuously labeled for XP. Secondly,
because I am so computerly challenged I only attempt procedures outlined by
concise, setp by step instructions and these instructions appear much too
general and complicated for my capabilities. I greatly appreciate your taking
time to consider and answer my post. K.

The version of Windows has nothing to do with the case. Presumably you have
Office XP (Word 2002). The article at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErr...ngMenusEtc.htm gives the
specific Registry entry for Word 2002:

\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0 \Word\Data

And it seems to me that the step-by-step instructions in the section "If you
have never edited the Registry before" are concise and specific. I suggest
you read the article again--this time read it all the way to the end.

As for the article at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Custom...eserveSettimgs,
it also provides specific step-by-step instructions in the section "How to
preserve your Settings preferences." That method will work in Word 2002 or
any other version.
