Default space bar deletes character if pressed in between characters

When I want to put another word in the middle of a sentence, I am now having
to cut and paste the rest of the line out as if I try to put a space in
between the word the space bar is deleting them the same as if you press the
back button, I have not made any changes to word that I know of, but it has
only recently started doing it, and would like to stop it. I am using word
2003 with vista windows.
