Default Cross-referencing a word to the table of contents

Can anyone help? I finished a document two years again and within the main
body of text certain words were referenced back to the table of contents.
I've recently had to re-format the whole document for branding purposes and
now cannot seem to do this again? I now have Windows XP.....does anyone have
any ideas?

Thanks

Perhaps the document contained TC fields? Or do you mean that certain words
were hyperlinked to the TOC?
