Default System says disk check laptop frozen?

My laptop says a disk consistency check is required on C: FAT32, press any
key to skip check however counter only goes down to 5 seconds then stalls,
cannot carry on disk check or stop disck check. Any ideas why?

I could probably re-boot but I don't want to lose anything saved on the laptop

I don't see how this has anything to do with Microsoft Word, which is the
subject of this newsgroup.
