[frustrated]

Here's my frustration,

I use the autotext function to insert the file name in the footer of the
document on which I'm working. Recently for no apparant reason (I can find)
an incorrect file name is being displayed and therefore saved with my
documents. It's like the path to the filename has been corrupted. How can if
fix this problem?
Your advice will be much appreciated.

The AutoText you are referring to makes use of fields. It seems as if the
fields have been unlinked, and static text is being inserted instead. What
happens if you press Alt+F9 to show the field codes?

If you see no change (only text), then the fields have indeed been deleted.
You can reinsert them as follows:

{ PAGE } of { NUMPAGES }

Use Ctrl+F9 to insert each pair of field delimiters, { }. Press F9 to update
fields. Use Alt+F9 to show/hide field codes.

To recreate the AutoText, select the whole field construct above, press
Alt+F3. Specify a descriptive name for the AutoText. It will be saved in
your Normal template, and it will be available to insert into any document.

Note that if you are saying that several AutoText entries are missing, you
might want to exit Word and then rename normal.dot. A new copy with factory
default settings will be created the next time you start Word. If you need

Thanks Stefan, I'm a happy chappie!

Strange thing was the my other AutoText fields in the documents e.g page
numbers, cross references, footnotes etc were all ok; but every time I tried
inserting the file name by AutoText it inserted the name of another document
previously deleted as text not as a field.

Your recommendation to delete the normal.dot file has resolved the issue.

That's two problems in two days I've now managed to resolve thanks to this
Discussion Group; how good is that!
