Default Don't want to Select Data Source EVERY time I open the merge docum

I have correctly assigned a data source to the word 2003 document and now
want my user to simply open the document and select to Merge to New Document.
This option is not available though, since the user must go and OPen Data
Source every time. Please help!

Sally:
I see there were no responses to your post, and don't have anything to
offer, but I did wonder if you were able to achieve a solution? I have a
similar problem with a client using Office 2003 Small Bus. Ed. where it will
not retain the data source on a a mail merge. If we open the same document
on a machine that uses Word 2002 it works fine.

Thanks Peter. I did the regedit per the attached thread and it did NOT
resolve my issue. In fact, I'm now at a second user site and have just
encountered the problem again! This user has Office Professional 2003 with
SP2 installed and it won't retain the data source. I'm at a loss!

I seem to have stumbled onto a resolution for this problem, although I don't
know why it works. In the merges that I was doing both my document and my
data source resided on a folder on a server, while the user was at a network
workstation. By moving the data source onto the "C" drive of the local
machine it now retains the data source on the merge document. As I say, I
don't know WHY this works, but I've tried it now in both of the locations
where I was having the data source retention problem and it has fixed it in
both cases.

I believe that it is something to do with the length of the path to the
folder on the network that causes an SQL select string to exceed the maximum
"rememberable" address - something like the usual 255 characters.
