Booklet printing problem on HP
I am using the bookfold option in Word 2002 to print a booklet on half letter
paper (5.5"x8.5") so that when folded I get a 4.25" wide by 5.5" tall booklet. I can print the booklet just fine on my Epson 785 EPX photo printer. Making no changes to page setup margins, when I try to use my HP D145 multifunction printer(which conveniently has the double sided printing capability), I get a very wide inside margin that is much larger than the .5" inside margin + .2" gutter that I specified. As a result, a lot of my text gets truncated on the right side of the page. I did not see any printer settings for the HP that would be causing this. By the way, print preview on the screen looks fine and does not match the actual printout. Does anyone know of a solution? |

Be aware that Inside and Outside margins are reversed in "Book fold." Yes,
this is a bug. -- Suzanne S. Since I set both to .5", this is not the cause of my problem. However, it
does answer why when I change the inside margin slightly the outside margin is affected. "Suzanne S. Barnhill" wrote: Be aware that Inside and Outside margins are reversed in "Book fold." Ok, now I got it to work. I set the outside margin (really the inside) to 0"
and set the gutter to .7". For some reason, the .5" outside setting was getting magnified by the HP to create a much larger inside margin. Thanks for pointing out the "bug" as then I was able to tweak the margins more effectively to overcome the problem. I am still puzzled why the previous margin settings produced a 1.9" left margin for the right side of the page rather than the .7" that I had specified (.2" gutter + .5" "outside" margin), and only on my HP printer. Oh well. At least I can do what I want now. Thanks. |

FWIW, I never use the "gutter" setting at all. I figure it's for the
math-impaired. -- Suzanne S. Anyway, I found it interesting that the gutter worked accurately and the
margin did not, for the HP printer anyway. BTW, I have a BS in mathematics so your theory may not hold up anymore |

Well, I'm sure there are cases (such as yours) where the gutter is useful
(and in fact I also use it in the booklet method described at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting...etPrinting.htm). But when you have selected mirror margins, then the Inside margin is equal to the sum of the gutter and whatever other margin you want; e.g., if you want 1" margins on both sides and a half-inch gutter, then the Inside margin is 1.5". I do not find it very difficult to figure that out. -- Suzanne S.
