Default TOC Showing Backslashes when using Quotation Marks

Does anyone know how to get rid of one or more backslashes that appear at the
end of a table of contents entry that contains quotation marks?

For example, the text in the document is
I am €œso€ much cooler

The field code is
{ TC €œI am \€œso\€ much cooler€ \f C \l €œ2€ }

The TOC is
I am €œso€ much cooler ......................................2\\

I am using MS Word 2002 with SP3. The option to use smart quotes in place
of straight quotes is enabled.

THANKS!
