Depending on the version of Word you are using the option to open an Excel
workbook to convert it in Word has been removed. You can use Copy/Paste
instead.

I thought it was odd, but every time i try to open an excel file, it asks me
what type of text to convert from. I odnt know why, it never used to do this.

Where are you opening the file? In Excel? In Word? Are you double-clicking
the file from an Exploring window, such as your Desktop, to open it?

OK, Beth's trying to break it to you gently, but this is the bottom line:-)

Word *cannot* OPEN Excel workbook files, Excel *cannot* OPEN Word documents.

Perhaps what you have used before is Insert Object Create from File ? Or
maybe you have done as Beth suggested and opened a workbook in Excel, copied
content then pasted into a Word doc.

Okay, to clarify, you are double-clicking an Excel file on your Desktop to
open it. Instead of Excel starting, Word starts and asks for more
information on converting the file, correct? If so, then does the issue
occur if you start Excel and then use File/Open to open the file on your
Desktop? If not then try re-registering your Excel application. This will
recreate the file associations for Excel since it sounds like Excel files
are attempting to open with Word. To re-register Excel, go to Start/Run and
type:

excel /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash. Then click OK. You might see the
Windows Installer, which is rebuilding various keys in the Registry as
previously described. After the Windows Installer is complete, try opening
your file again.

Ah - maybe this is it... Perhaps Word (or some other app) has somehow gotten
associated with Excel files. These instructions may vary a little depending
on your version & setup of Windows:

Right-click the file & choose Open With... Choose Program,
Select Excel in the list that comes up and tick the box for "Always use...",
Click OK

See if that corrects the behavior.

Word can open Excel files if you install the old Excel filter (download from
my web site if you don't have an old version of Word).
