printers (one HP LaserJet [parallel] and one HP DeskJet [USB]) both work
fine with whatever drivers are currently installed. The only time Windows
finds "new hardware" is when the USB printer gets disconnected and
reconnected. But I agree that the area of printer drivers is a mystery
seldom plumbed by even power users of Word.

but it depends what you mean by installed. Did you run an exe you got

the manufacturer's site - or did you reinstall the driver via the device
manager? Whichever, it seems certain that the new driver has resolved

problem.
I confess to not understanding all the issues with printer drivers. I
have
a
laser printer which works just fine after I run whatever it was I
downloaded
but somehow Windows (XP) does not think it has a driver and every time I
reboot it says it has found new hardware - I just Cancel and all is
well.
As
everything works and I reboot rarely it doesn't bother me but there is
part
of me that would like to understand.
