Word 2003 SP2 on XP...

Each chapter/appendix in one of our manuals consists of a separate document,
and I've been tasked with making it a more cohesive, easily modified (i.e.,
self-updating) chunk.

The TOC file is properly linked using the {TOC} and {RD} field codes and
works. Now I need to link in figure/chapter # references... what field codes
are appropriate for this task (an example is appreciated)?

For example, in the file for Appendix B, I may need to write "See section
C1.3.5 and Figure 4.5", with Figure 4.5 and section C1.3.5 in two other files.

The closest I've come to an answer is the LINK field code:
{ LINK ClassName "FileName" [PlaceReference ] [Switches ] }

The FileName is obvious, and for switches I may or may not use /a, but I'm
not sure what should be in the ClassName and PlaceReference fields.

For PlaceReference, the only examples I could find were for linking in Excel
cells, but I don't know the format for inserting figure or chapter header
references.

Still searching for an answer...

Create a bookmark to surround the caption.

You then have two options for referring to that bookmark:

1. Use an INCLUDETEXT field as described at
http://homepage.swissonline.ch/cindy...Q.htm#PgOverDc. That
example is referring to a page number, but the same principle applies.

2. Insert Hyperlink. Type something appropriate in the Text to display
box. In the Address box type the document name, then click the Bookmark
button and choose your bookmark.

Thanks, Shauna... I did come across the bookmark option, but it was a last
resort. To do so, I would have to bookmark every heading/subheading, every
figure, every table, etc., and that alone is a lot or work (1,000+ page
manual). I may consider the hyperlink idea a little more closely (assuming I
can force it to not underline the links and look like normal text).

Headings and captions are bookmarked automatically. Try it. Apply a heading
style in your document, then open Insert | Hyperlink and click on Bookmarks.
You'll see your heading listed.

It never dawned on me that those links (the automatically created bookmarks)
would work across documents, but I realize now that they're no different than
a manually inserted bookmark. I haven't tried it yet, but that may be the
workable solution I've been looking for.
