Default Page Numbering Problem - not correct #

Problem - page numbers in header "drop back" to earlier numbers, as in Page
"2" following page "7".

I have a number of section breaks in the doc - particularly those inserted
automatically by Word when I create multi-column bulleted lists.

Example of problem on pages 7 and what should be 8 but says 2 (I can't get
the "paragraph" or "break" character in this message - the one you click to
show formatting marks - so, for this message, that character = "&")

2) Project Design=======Section Break (Continuous)=============
* Park...& * Golf...&
* Sports...& * Camp...&======
&
3) Golf Course&

&=======Section Break (Continuous)=============
* Evaluate...& * Investigate...&
* Study...& * Punt...&======

Key conclusion:&

yada yada&

(then the text automatically flows to the next page)

[Header at top of next page has page "2".]
--------
The "2) Project Design" and "3) Golf Course" are "Heading 3" - I'm using
"Styles and Formatting".

When my cursor is in front of the first Section Break that sets up the 1st 2
column list, the bottom left of the Word windows says "Page 7 Sec 5".

When I move cursor down one line into the 2 column list the bottom left
changes to "Page 7 Sec 6".

When I move my cursor past the Section Break that ends the 2 column list,
the bottom left of the Word windows says "Page 7 Sec 7".

When I move cursor down into the 2nd 2 column list the bottom left changes
to "Page 7 Sec 8".

When I move cursor past the next Section Break that ends the 2nd 2 column
list, it says "Page 7 Sec 9".

When I put cursor behind last character on page 7, it still says "Page 7
Sec 9".

When I click right arrow and move to the first character on next page, it says "Page 2 Sec 9".

At each cursor position above, when I click "Insert/Page Numbers" to get
Page Numbers dialog, then click "Format", "Continue from Previous Section" is
always chosen - never "Start at:".

When I open the Header (either double click or "View/Header-Footer"), and
click "Format Page Number" in the dialog, it also says "Continue from
Previous Section". And, "Same as Previous" is shown above both the Headers
and Footers.

NOW - the footer on page 7 (that has nothing displayed in it - only shows
when I View Header/Footer) - the first page in my example - has
"Footer-Secton 5-" and "Same as Previous" above it, even though Section 5 is
at the start of that page, and Section 9 is at the bottom.

Is my problem somehow related to the Footer on page 7 "saying Sec 5" rather
than "Sec 9"?

Help is appreciated - thanks

John D

PS - 2nd issue/regarding this Discussion Group - in the past few days when I
click "New Question" at the top of this discussion page, I usually don't get
the new window with the question box - it takes a few seconds, flashes, and
re-displays the discussion group window with the same multiple threads
listed. Then, maybe about every 5th time or so, when I click "New Question" I
get the new question dialog. I can't find anything about this in the "help"
section, and I can't find any way to email Microsoft help about this.

Does anyone know what this problem is - how to "fix" it? Thanks again

Is the page numbering set to "Continue from previous section" in every
section?

Default Page Numbering Problem - not correct #

I am experiencing the same problem.

Problem:
My document is a report with multiple sections. Pages are numbered
1-1, 2-1, 2-2, ..., 2-n, 3-1, etc.
I (like John D) also have multi-column bullet lists, resulting in
section breaks in the middle of pages.
My page numbering for the footer on page 2-1 must be "restart at:
1" (with the section number plus '-' prescribed as a prefix")
So, whenever there is multi-column bullet list, it uses the "restart
at: 1"

Unfortunately, there is a major problem:
It is not possible to edit the footer of the inserted bullet-list.
Because that list is in the middle of the page, Word is "smart" enough
to disallow seeing the footer settings when I click previous and next
in Sections.

Some expert guidance seems necessary.

Thanks in advance,

David in Seattle

You can either insert a temporary page break in the middle of the
multi-column section to access the header/footer, or you can edit the page
number through Insert | Page Numbers | Format. Be careful to choose OK in
the Page Number Format dialog and Close in the Page Numbers dialog so you
don't insert another page number.

Suzanne,

Technically, this works. But one needs to add a page break for each
section break inserted prior to beginning with the process of fixing
the page numbers. Then, one has to go back through and remove the
breaks after the page number repair is complete.

It is very unfortunate that the fix to this problem within MS Word
could have taken less time to write code for that it takes for even a
single person to fix just one time in one document via editing.

Nevertheless, thank you kindly for showing me the path through this,

David

You don't have to add/remove a page break unless you choose to do it that
way. As I said, you can equally well do it through Insert | Page Numbers.
