Default recovery of lost files

Hi

I have a PC to install some extra hardware on where the owner was having
some hardware and software problems but to cut a long story short, he was
advised on a helpline to put the original Windows CD in and install "missing
or additional components" and he ended up re-installing Windows XP. He
appears to have lost all of his files from the previous installation. All
Word, Excel and his contact list in Access are gone, along with all his
family photos.

Is there any downloadable recovery software that anyone recommends to get
them back?

The application may well be OK, but the post was likely from a spammer who
responds with this solution to as many such posts as (s)he sees.
