Default Customized Page Numbering - Word 2003

Thanks for your help. I found a solution that works. I created the chapter
number (letter) using an used heading style. I change the font attribute
hidden. I then followed the instructions in your link to insert the chapter
number. When I updated the Index the page numbers appeared as S-1, S-2, etc.

Thanks again for you help.

The letter is not a chapter number. Is there any type of workaround?

Only if the letter is a "chapter number." See

I have a document where the numbering appears S-1, S-2, S-3, etc. When I
generate the TOC and/or the Index on the page number, not the letter
preceding the number. Can this be done?
