Default Languages - Chinese text shows as boxes

i have a user who was sent a word document that is written in both english
and chinese. When opened, the english text shows up in the document, but the
chinese shows up as squares/boxes. When I open the same word document on
other PC's using the same version of word (2003), I am able to see the
chinese characters w/ no problem.

I've tried the following:
1. Word--Tools--Language--Set Language....verified "Detect language
automatically" was set.
2. Enabled the Chinese (PRC) language in the Microsoft Office 2003 Language
Settings.

Any hlep is much appreciated!
