Default WORD: Incompatibility between columns and footnotes

I tend to write Prefaces to my editions in two columns, English and German.
If my text includes footnotes, the command 'next section (continuous)' forces
a page break which is often undesirable. Any ideas?

No ideas but some commiseration. I use a similar two-column method when
translating (source text in left column, target text in right column) and
for the life of me I can't get footnotes to appear on the right page most of
the time.

I'm using Office XP Professional and Word 2002 by the way.

It's a known issue--a workaround he

Simultaneous translation is often done by using a two-column table
instead of the Columns feature, and that might be an alternative also.

Thanks for your comment. The other posting had some help to offer, but it
does seem to be a problem! Michael
